STYLES OF NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Let’s talk about styles of newborn photography. Generally there are just two styles - studio and home lifestyle sessions. Over the years one more style has emerged - studio lifestyle. It is kind of a mix between the first two. Nowadays you will find more and more photographers offer it and more and more parents choose it. But what the difference between all of them? Below you will find a small graph which can help you distinguish the differences between these styles.

When I have just started my newborn photography business my primary focus has been just fine art newborn portraits. They are totally controlled by photographer in terms of props, colours, textures, lighting, composition, and poses to create an artful portraits. The fine art newborn photographer can work with so many or so little colours, props and textures. All the photographer’s time will be poured into styling, posing, lighting and composing the best shots possible. The typical posed newborn session can last for up to four hours. Yes, good things take time!

Parents portraits are generally taken with the plain background and are absolutely timeless. Generally I offer two types of the parents shots: classic and backlit. Below are some examples.

Over the years my vision and understanding of newborn portraits changed and in 2022 I started to add more relaxed family poses to my workflow.

My very first studio lifestyle corner has been done using just two studio sleeves from Graceland designs and been perfect for sitting poses of families. I really like their modern and relaxed feel.

Later that year I created a new studio lifestyle setup using extra wide arm chair with pillows. It looks awesome and if paired with a simple white beanbag setup allows me to create absolutely stunning newborn portraits. To make the photos looks clean and crisp I am using extra big continues lightning.

I really like that we can capture the connection between the parents and baby so perfectly. Take as many close ups of the baby in safe parents hands or beanbag. With settled baby the session can take just under couple of hours to fill your gallery full with lots and lots of baby portraits.

Baby is not sleeping - not to worry, we can take many portraits reflecting newborn’s personality. Just like we did for this baby boy.

But what about Fine art newborn portraits?

I love them and still offer! If you want a perfect piece of art work featuring your precious baby, I can surely create one for you! They are perfect to decorate your walls! My studio is full of props to use during the session and before every newborn session I am sending NEWBORN PRE-SESSION QUESTIONNAIRE which allows me to understand you needs and get ready for the photoshoot. Session style, prop colours and many more are covered in there.

Have some heirloom objects and would like to incorporate to the session? Bring them in and I will do my best to use them during the posed newborn session to create absolutely one of a kind newborn portrait.

So, if you are living is Sydney and expecting a new bundle of joy and searching a newborn photographer, make sure to check the style of photos they offer first.
